Just like the unit on Life of Pi, the fairy tale unit strengthened my ability to make inferences about the "why" behind literary elements- archetypes in particular. Additoinally, the group presentation for The Little Mermaid was my first conscious use of a specific lens. Our group focused heavily on the gender and historical lenses and as a result I now feel quite confident with these analysis perspectives- I still need to improve on my skills with the other lenses which we did not use. Our group worked extremely well together and gathered quality research- we could have and should have done better with the presentation itself, however. For future oral presentations, rehearsing the presentation before parents or peers would be a good idea to avoid the awkwardness we struggled with. The research project and fractured fairy tale also improved my creativity skills by deepening my understanding of creativity. I now understand creativity is original ideas, using a wide variety of sources, and originality, instead of my previous definition of merely artistic. Our group was able to utilize a wide variety of sources such as the survey, digital media, historical facts, and the story itself. We could use some improvement, however, in the creation of original ideas. Lastly, my understanding of Freytag’s pyramid remains relatively lacking. I can identify plot elements fairly well; although, I still have some trouble making inferences regarding the purpose behind specific plot elements.
